“My love of the visual arts, music, theatre, literature, and poetry, in particular, started with my maternal grandmother, who raised me. On humid Midwest summer evenings, with the scent of roses and honeysuckle and the sounds of crickets and cicadas, we sat on our front porch gently swinging back and forth as she recited Golden Book adventures. In winter, I curled up with her in the big platform rocker in our bedroom as she read poetry, fables, and exotic stories. Her reading aloud influenced me beyond measure. It was an enchanted time.”
